5 Ways to Get the Best Out of Radishes

May 2nd, 2008 by admin

They sit left behind on relish trays. They’re often by-passed in
grocery store refrigerator shelves. Dad and Grandpa usually eat
them but later complain of belching them up. The poor radish has
gotten a bum rap. There are at least five different varieties;
but for now, the popular, red globe variety will be spotlighted.
They are a great source of vitamin C and an excellent low calorie
snack (only 12 calories in a half cup of radishes). Radishes are
root vegetables that are classified in the cabbage and mustard
family, thus their strong taste.

Most people eat them raw, with a little salt. If you’d like your
radishes to be a little crispier and a little less sharp in
taste, put them in ice water for a couple hours before you plan
to eat them. There are also a number of ways to cook them. Boil
a half inch of water, add the sliced radishes, and then cover
and simmer until tender, adding more water if necessary. Cook
five to ten minutes. To microwave, place a half pound of sliced
radishes in a microwave safe dish with 1 tablespoon of water or
broth. Cook for approximately four minutes.

If the taste of raw radishes is a little too pungent for some,
try them steamed. Their bright red skin will turn pink on steamed
radishes. The easiest way to steam them is to place whole
radishes in a vegetable steamer and cook over boiling water until
barely tender. Cook approximately eight to twelve minutes.
Another way to prepare our friend, the red radish, is to stir fry
them. Sliced radishes combine well with other vegetables and
meat in stir-fries. Don’t over cook them or they’ll become mushy.
Cook approximately three to five minutes.

As Cliff Claven would say, “It’s a little known fact that ”
radishes were first cultivated thousands of years ago in China,
then in Egypt and Greece. In Greece they were so highly regarded
that gold replicas were made. (Now that’s some serious radish
lovers!)

So the next time you walk past radishes in the grocery store or
at the market, back track a few steps and pick up a bunch or two.
Or better yet, plant some in your garden this year. Radishes
are one of the very first vegetables ready for harvest in the
spring. They will in turn, ready your soil for other veggies!
Give these little guys a chance again.

Learn to Eat Healthier And Reap The Benefits

April 24th, 2008 by admin

Your body depends upon the fuel that you put into
it. Not fueling up with the right things can make
a big difference in how your feel and how your body
performs. Healthy eating is very important, but
there are other things that can affect your
performance as well.

Some healthy eating myth busters are listed below.

1. An empty stomach and working out.
If your stomach is growling, you need to listen.
If you do not listen, you are making your body
run without any fuel. Always eat a light snack,
such as a piece of fruit, before exercising or
doing any other physical activity.

2. Depending upon energy drinks and bars.
These are fine for every once in a while, but they
do not have the antioxidants that you need to help
prevent cancer and other health problems. Fruit and
vegetables are a great way to get your needed
vitamins, minerals, fluid, and fiber, all in one
place.

3. Breakfast skipping.
This is never a very good idea, because breakfast
is the very first meal of the day. Your body needs
that fuel after not eating during the night, and
without it, you will be hungry and your body will
be low on fuel throughout the day, which can cause
physical symptoms.

4. Eating low carb.
Carbohydrates are needed for your body’s muscles
and in the storing of energy.

5. Eating what you want to eat.
Even if you do eat healthy and exercise it does not
give you a pass to eat just anything that you want
to eat. Everyone’s body needs the same nutrients
from fruits and vegetables, whether you exercise or
not.

6. Not eating enough calories.
Losing weight too quickly is not safe. Aim for 1-2
pounds a week to be safe. Make sure that you give
your body enough calories to keep your body working
in tip-top condition. If you start losing weight
quicker than you should then you probably need to
eat a little more food.

7. Don’t drink alcohol or sodas.
Active people need to drink juice, milk, or water
for maximum health. Don’t rely on thirst as your
indicator, drink often. By the time you begin
feeling thirsty, your body is already beginning to
get dehydrated.

Deciding to change how you eat is a great step in
making yourself healthier and increasing your body’s
performance. The healthier that you eat, the better
that you will feel and the more efficiently your body
will work. It does not matter what age you are.
Healthy eating can start at any time. If you give it
a chance you will find yourself feeling better in no time!

15 Really Easy Ways to Burn Off Calories

March 25th, 2008 by admin

1. Cheese is good for you, but the fat is not. Try this: Zap cheese in the microwave and drain off grease.

2. Exercising before you eat just makes you hungrier. Exercise AFTER eating when the body has to work
harder to digest food.

3. Don’t eat while watching television. You can become so engrossed in your program that don’t
realize how much you are eating.

4.Too many people skip breakfast. Eat in the morning when the body burns more calories.

5. Water mixed with fructose suppresses appetite better than glucose with water or diet drinks.
Drink a glass of orange juice one half to one hour before a meal.

6. Avoid shopping when you are hungry - eat first!

7. Stay away from processed foods as much as possible. Yes, they are very convenient.
They are also loaded with fat and/or sugar, not to mention the chemicals.

8. The ads are soooo compelling. Cut fast food from your diet!

9. Eat more fish but avoid breading or batters. Fish oil is good for you.

10. Steam your veggies instead of boiling them. They’ll taste better and you’ll retain more of their
nutritional value.

11. Go ahead and snack, just snack on good stuff, like raisins, nuts veggies, and dried fruit.

12. Never eat while you are standing.

13. Don’t sample when you are cooking. A taste here, a little bite there and before you know it you’ve eaten
an entire portion without sitting down at the table!

14. Don’t give up potatoes. A baked potato has 0 grams of fat and only 160 calories. Just don’t eat fries that weigh in at 13 fat grams and 480 calories!

15. Beware of misleading claims. Reduced fat merely means that the item has 25% less fat. Use common sense.
