Singing Exercises and Hints for Singers

KEEP YOUR VOICE HEALTHY

Whether you’re a professional or an amateur singer, it’s important to stay fit and healthy. To maintain proper breathing ensuring that you have full use of your lungs, regular exercise should be part of your day. Walking and swimming are particularly good for performers because they don’t add unwanted stress to your muscles. There is less chance of injury when you swim or walk, which is important if your aim is to perform professionally. Time out from singing could mean a loss of income. Maintaining a good, balanced diet will help to keep your body fit on the inside. Make sure you eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits. Singers should try to avoid eating too much dairy food as it often builds up phlegm which can adversely affect your vocal chords and sinuses. A number of professional singers gargle with and swallow pineapple juice. It can be a natural way of cleaning the gunk off your vocal chords before a performance.

TAKE SINGING LESSONS
Choose a good singing teacher to help motivate you and keep you practicing on a regular basis. It’s very important that your singing teacher is qualified and experienced. Word-of-mouth is usually the best way to find the right teacher or you can contact the Music Teachers’ Association in your local area for some sound advice. A good singing teacher can help you to get rid of bad singing habits and give you individually tailored vocal and breathing exercises. I recommend that you book in for a half hour or one hour lesson once a week. Regular lessons and regular practice can do wonders. Many professional entertainers that I know continue to have singing lessons. Some even take their teacher with them on tour!

DON’T STRAIN YOUR VOICE!

Always warm up before you start singing your songs. I recommend some relaxing breathing exercises then gentle humming first. Don’t sing too loudly at first. Give your muscles time to prepare. If you feel that something is too high then sing it an octave lower. You will need to have a set of exercises that develop different aspects of your voice and musicality - they should include major, minor and chromatic scales and arpeggios in a variety of pitches using different vowel and consonant sounds. Remember that the vowel sounds you use in singing can be quite different from the way you speak. They can also vary considerably from one music style to another, including Country, Rock, Jazz, Musicals and Classical. Keep in mind that the key you are singing in may be too high or low. If so, ask your teacher to transpose the music into a key that suits your individual voice. With the advent of computers and midi backings, it’s easy to change keys these days.

Brain Exercises

Some brain exercises can be as simple as an intelligent conversation or reading something new. Others can be more involved, like doing crossword puzzles or solving lateral thinking puzzles. These are general brain exercises you can do anywhere, followed by a few ideas for exercising specific areas of brain function.

Some Simple Brain Exercises

An entertaining brain exercise is to invent things in your mind. You can use many techniques for doing this. It can be as simple as looking at things and asking “How could this be better?” Consider a clock, for example, and you might wonder if it would be better if you didn’t have to look at it. Maybe a clock that periodically announced the time and even reminded you of appointments might be useful.

Other brain exercises involve puzzle solving. These can range from crossword puzzles to difficult lateral thinking puzzles, but a simpler, fun version of the latter, is the basic riddle. For example, “Why wasn’t Bertha put in jail after killing dozens of people?” Because she was a hurricane. Whether riddles are easy or difficult, they get your mind thinking in new directions, and this is good for getting your mind out of it’s “ruts.”.

Inventing jokes is one of the more difficult brain exercises, especially if you haven’t done it before. Just take a topic or a word at random, and find a way to make a joke with it. The word “Justice,” for example, could become “What’s the one place in the world you can find justice?” In the dictionary! If you draw a blank after five or ten minutes, move on to the next word or topic.

Brain Exercises For Specific Areas

You may want to work on a particular area of your brainpower. Some of us have trouble with visual imagination, for example. To be architects, we would want to improve that. This can be done by concentrating on scenes in one’s mind. Imagine walking through your home, for example, and repeat the process until you can easily “see” everything in each room.

For better concentration, practice identifying “mind” irritations. Anything that’s going on just below the surface is sapping your ability to concentrate. Become aware of these things, and you can put them on a list or otherwise dismiss them. More formal meditation practices can help with this, but simple mindfulness exercises may be enough to let your natural powers of concentration function.

Simple brain exercises to strengthen your memory can be the repetitive use of any memory techniques. For example, mentally placing a list of items to be remembered at predetermined locations in your house, and seeing them there in an unusual way (think cucumbers dancing in the microwave), is one such technique. Just imagining where you’ll see a person next, and calling to them by name in your imagination is a good way to remember names.

get a little wild to develop your creativity. See things and imagine something absurd, like flying lights. For more than just an exercise in imagination, though, you have to create some sense of the image. For this example, I’m thinking there might be a market for little lights on helium balloons. With a more or less neutral buoyancy for the balloons, a party could be full of colorful, floating, moving lights.

Recent research makes it clear that exercising your brain makes it work better. A more active brain has even been shown to postpone or reduce the incidence of age-related decline of mental function. So why not start today with some simple brain exercises?

Exercises for Better Sex

Sex is a physical activity so naturally getting and keeping fit will greatly improve your love-making skills. Here are some exercises for better sex.

The pubococcygeal (PC) muscles

The muscles you use to stop urinating midstream are called the pubococcygeal (PC) muscles. If you’re male they’re also the muscles that contract when you ejaculate. You can learn to build control over them and prolong ejaculation by doing an exercise called a Kegel. Start by doing a short clench of your PC muscles, relax, and then try to do a longer clench for about 10 to 15 seconds. Repeat ten times, at least three times a day. The more you do the better control you will have.

Kegel exercises are good for women to do as well. By practicing them you will have more control over your vaginal muscles. You’ll get more sexual satisfaction and a reduced chance of vaginal infections.

Pelvic lifts

Lie down on your back with your knees bent and your hands by your side. Lift your pelvis up and down as if you were having sexual intercourse. This is a great exercise for the doggy-style position. It’s also my favorite exercise for better sex.

Push-ups

Lie down on your stomach with your hands parallel to your shoulders. Push up with your hands until your arms are straight and your chest and knees are off the ground. Then lower your body so it almost touches the ground. Repeat ten to twenty times.

Crunches

Lie down on your back with your knees bent. Cross your feet together and lift them off the ground so that they are parallel to the floor. With your hands on the back of your head or crossed against your chest lift your chest off the ground using your stomach. Be sure to focus on a spot on the ceiling to avoid straining your neck. Do three sets of twenty each.

Slides

Lie down on your back with your knees bent. Place your hands on the top of your thighs and slide them to the top of your knees, lifting your chest off the ground and using your stomach muscles. Slide your hands back down to your thighs. Do three sets of twenty each. Again, be sure to focus on a spot on the ceiling to avoid straining your neck

Prayers

Lie down on your back with your knees bent and legs apart. With your hands in a prayer position push them through your legs, lifting your chest off the ground and using your stomach muscles. Do three sets of twenty each.

Do push-ups and stomach exercises to strengthen your shoulder, back and abdominal muscles. You won’t tire as easy when you’re making love.
